J.J. Noonan Scholarship Award

The J.J. Noonan Scholarship Award is for students pursuing a laboratory animal science degree at local schools and colleges. The award is based on merit, achievement and need, and is for furthering the student's education in the laboratory animal science field.

Award

Two scholarships sent directly to the school or college shall be awarded annually, each award consisting of a $1,000 honorarium.

Nominee Qualifications & Criteria


To be eligible for nomination, the candidate:


  • Must be pursuing a full-time high school, college, or graduate-level curriculum related to laboratory animal science or medicine.
  • Must maintain an overall “B” grade level either currently or in the past year.
  • Must demonstrate financial need to complete their education.
  • Must be preparing to enter a career in laboratory animal science or a related field.
  • Should be attempting to gain practical experience with lab animals, large or small, used in research, education, training, or testing before or while attaining an academic education. Working summer, weekends, or evenings caring for or managing animals is important in rounding out the formal education.
  • Must be attending an eligible institution.*


*Institution eligibility: The candidate MUST attend an institution that has a letter on file with DVB AALAS stating that the school or college curriculum meets the qualifications of the J.J. Noonan Scholarship Award criteria.

  • University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School
  • W.B. Saul High School
  • University of Delaware

Nomination Process


The candidate must submit a letter to the DVB AALAS Awards Chairperson describing their personal qualifications and why they should be given the scholarship award.


This letter should address:

  • School candidate is attending or planning to attend.
  • Candidate’s current and/or past grade point average (whichever applies).
  • Candidate’s financial need.
  • Candidate’s intended career goals are related to lab animal science.
  • Candidate’s practical experience with lab animals used in research, education, training, or testing before or while attaining an academic education.


In addition, the candidate must submit a letter of recommendation from the appropriate institutional official to validate the candidate’s application letter.


Applicants who do not address the specific qualifications listed above or who do not submit a recommendation letter will not be considered
